House of Babies! Sent Nov. 6th
Well, Happy Halloween everybody! Halloween doesn't really exist over here, but I decided to wish you all a happy one anyway, and it leads nicely into my first funny story (I have a good amount of funny stories this week).
So first funny story, as usual, it has to do with a language error. So the only Halloween thing I saw going on was the young women were watching a scary movie, and their leader was cooking for it. My companion asked me what kind of stuff people eat for Halloween in America (He's American, so I don't why he asked me, I guess he couldn't think of anything). Well I thought about it and realized the answer was pretty much just candy. So as we were walking out, past a bunch of kids, I said in french that Halloween food is candy. Well my companion died of laughter and I knew I said something wrong. Apparently Le Bonbon is candy and Les Bonbon is a drug. I said the second. Bummer. But always a good language learning experience!
The second story is about my companion. Today for P-day we were playing some Yahtzee, and all wrote names of different members we like on our scorecards. My companion wrote "President Pauls Mom", that is the mom of the branch president and she is super cool. Anyway, the Branch President was over helping fix some things at the house (our back door got eaten by temites and fell off) and came to see what we were doing. He looked and saw his mom written on the score card and was super confused. Elder Taylor and I were laughing so hard, Elder McQuiston was a little embarrassed, but it was all good. President Paul thought it was way funny too.
This week was a little slow in terms of missionary work. The Hawaiki Nui was this week, which is pretty much the biggest thing in Tahaa, if not all of Polonysie Français (I couldnt remember how to spell that in english, which is funny because it probably isn't correct in French either, at least this way it's better hidden). I think it is one of the biggest rowing competitions in the world, and that is everyone's favorite sport here. So pretty much the everyone here was at that Thursday and Friday. We went Friday and handed out a bunch of brochures which was fun. Everyone was watching out for the three groups of white guys trying to talk to people, super funny, but a lot of people were receptive. My companion said he would approach the first person, but next was me. Then we had someone walk up to us and just ask for one, tell us how she is an investigator on a different island and loves the church, then she left. My companion told me "That's how it's done". Needless to say no one else was that receptive, but we still had some success. We also got to watch all the boats come in, and that was super cool!
So about the title "House of Babies". We got our transfer calls this Friday and my trainer is leaving. Super sad, and kind of scary because my new companion only got here one transfer before I did. And the other two Elders in this house are in the same boat. So all four of us knew each other in the MTC. We are gonna be thrown into learning by teaching, not by watching now, which is scary, but also pretty darn exciting. This area has a lot of potential, so lets hope we can make the most of that with our limited experience!
Well, sorry for the long emails, honestly, I probably never would have read someones email if it was this long, so shout out to whoever made it this far! I just want to wrap up with my testimony. Satan is attacking everyone, trying to get them to fall. But God has given us everything we need to be victorious!!!! He has given us the Book of Mormon, Prophets and Apostles, Commandments, and the opportunity to pray to him wherever and whenever!! All we have to do is make the most of these. ACTIVELY pursue the word of God. How cool is it that our Father in Heaven has given us all we need to be happy in this life and the next, and all we have to do is accept it and act on it. That's pretty darn amazing if you ask me!! So don't miss the opportunity! And have an amazing week. Love you all!
